Father of Norwegian Track Star Found Guilty of Assaulting Daughter but Acquitted of Charges against Olympic Son

The father of renowned Norwegian track star, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, has recently been convicted of assaulting his daughter, Ingrid. Gjert Ingebrigtsen, a well-known coach in Norway and the father of two-time Olympic gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen, was found guilty by Norway’s South Rogaland District Court on one count of minor assault. However, he was acquitted of other charges related to abusing Jakob and his other siblings.

The court’s decision comes after a lengthy trial that took place over several months. Despite the allegations against him, Gjert maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. The court ruled in favour of Ingrid’s claim that her father had assaulted her by whipping her face with a towel, causing a strike to her cheek in January 2022. In response, Ingrid stated that her father had apologised for raising his voice but not for the actual incident.

Gjert Ingebrigtsen, a father of seven, was handed a 15-day suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay approximately $1,011 in compensation. His legal team emphasised that there was a lack of evidence showing continuous fear created by Gjert in his children. They also highlighted that several family members and outside witnesses did not witness or experience any abuse as claimed.

The Ingebrigtsen family rose to fame in Norway through their documentary series, “Team Ingebrigtsen,” which showcased Gjert coaching his sons, Jakob, Filip, and Henrik, in track-and-field. The show garnered immense popularity and ran for five seasons until 2021. However, in 2022, the three brothers accused their father of physical violence and intimidation in a column published in the national newspaper, VG.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen, a world champion and Olympic gold medallist, expressed his bewilderment at the court’s decision, deeming it “very strange.” Despite the verdict, Jakob remains focused on moving forward and continuing his athletic career. His lawyer, Mette Yvonne Larsen, asserted that the experience has been challenging for Jakob, especially considering the nature of the allegations.

The Ingebrigtsen family’s journey has captured the attention of many in Norway and beyond, with fans closely following their successes and struggles on and off the track.
