On Wednesday morning, October 28, authorities were alerted to the abduction, prompting an immediate response from the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) and its Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force. Chavez is allegedly responsible for kidnapping the girl and was said to have inflicted serious injuries on her older sister during the incident.

According to a statement issued by the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office (CCDAO), Chavez faces ten felony charges, including serious allegations such as sexual abuse, burglary, and unlawful use of a weapon, along with the previously mentioned counts. The district attorney’s office requested that he be held without bail, a request that was granted by a circuit judge.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Owen expressed gratitude for the prompt actions taken by law enforcement in apprehending Chavez before he could cause further harm. The ability to act quickly in such tense situations is vital, and Owen highlighted the collaboration between multiple agencies, which included local police, a SWAT team, and the FBI.
The operation to find both the suspect and the young victim culminated in a raid in Oregon City, approximately ten miles from Canby. The task force executed the raid after locating Chavez in a residential property on Pleasant Avenue. Reports indicate that he attempted to escape through the back of the house as police made their entry.
Upon entering the residence, authorities discovered the ten-year-old girl restrained in a closet, reportedly bound with duct tape and placed inside a duffle bag. Video from the scene captured law enforcement escorting the girl to safety, after which she was taken to a local medical facility for necessary treatment and evaluation.
The CCDAO also reported that the girl’s older sister sustained severe injuries, including multiple blows to the head with a hammer, emphasising the violent nature of the incident.
The entire operation to locate the young girl took around 13 hours, demonstrating the urgent and coordinated effort of law enforcement. Eddie Sanchez, Chief Deputy United States Marshal for the District of Oregon, commended the collaboration of the various agencies involved, underscoring their commitment to community safety and holding violent offenders accountable.
Chavez is scheduled to be arraigned on an indictment on November 5. The case has drawn significant public attention, and the CCDAO has been approached for further updates as it progresses.
The identities of the victims, particularly the young girl, have not been disclosed due to privacy considerations, reflecting the sensitivity required in cases involving minors. The community remains on high alert as details emerge, and many are expressing solidarity with the victims and their families during this distressing time.
As legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and maintaining safety within the community in which this troubling incident occurred.
