Former MTV VJ and Talk Show Host, Ananda Lewis, Passes Away at 52

Ananda Lewis, a former MTV VJ and talk show host, has sadly passed away at the age of 52. The tragic news was confirmed by her sister, Lakshmi, in a heartfelt Facebook post on June 11. Lakshmi described Ananda as being “free, and in His heavenly arms,” adding a series of broken heart emojis to express her grief. The post also included a poignant black and white portrait of Lewis, with Lakshmi writing, “Lord, rest her soul 🙏🏽”.
Lewis rose to fame in 1997 when she joined MTV as one of its VJs. Hosting popular shows such as Total Request Live and Hot Zone, she quickly became a household name. In 1999, The New York Times hailed her as “the hip-hop generation’s reigning It Girl.” After leaving MTV in 2001, Lewis went on to host her own talk show, The Ananda Lewis Show.
In a candid Instagram post in 2020, Lewis revealed her battle with stage III breast cancer. She disclosed that her fear of radiation had kept her from getting regular mammograms, leading to a late diagnosis. Despite medical advice, she opted against a double mastectomy, which unfortunately resulted in the cancer metastasizing to stage IV.
Born in Los Angeles in 1973, Lewis had a challenging childhood marked by her parents’ divorce when she was just 2 years old. Alongside her sister, Lakshmi, she moved with her mother to live with their grandmother in San Diego. Overcoming personal struggles, Lewis opened up about her complex relationship with her mother in a 1999 interview, shedding light on their journey towards reconciliation.
Lewis’s career continued to soar as she transitioned from MTV to hosting her own talk show and later appearing on various television programs. She garnered praise for her ability to handle live television and in-depth interviews with celebrities, covering both light-hearted and serious topics with equal grace.
