Zach Bryan, the acclaimed country music artist, has attributed the early stages of his musical career to a pivotal influence during his time in the U.S. Navy. Serving from 2013 to 2021, Bryan received an honourable discharge that allowed him to dedicate himself fully to music, particularly after his breakout song “Heading South” gained significant popularity.

In a recent interview with fellow actor Matthew McConaughey, Bryan revealed the crucial role played by his former commanding officer, who encouraged him to explore his musical aspirations while serving. This conversation coincided with the release of Bryan’s latest EP, titled *Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs*, which features collaborations with notable artists including Lana Del Rey and the Turnpike Troubadours.

During the discussion, McConaughey made a light-hearted reference to reports that Bryan shares a portion of his song royalties with his commanding officer. Bryan confirmed this, highlighting the deep respect and gratitude he holds for the encouragement he received. “He’s the reason I recorded any songs at all,” Bryan explained, crediting his commanding officer, whose name is Alba, for influencing his creative journey.
The singer expressed that Alba’s belief in him had a profound impact on his life and his decision to pursue a music career. “I wouldn’t be who I was without him looking at me and saying I can record those songs,” Bryan said, emphasising the bond that has formed between them, which he described as familial. He shared that Alba’s children refer to him as their uncle, and he continues to maintain a close relationship with his mentor.
Bryan’s departure from military service enabled him to focus on music, and he’s grateful for the success that followed. He stated that the financial rewards from his music have allowed him to live comfortably outside of the Navy, underscoring the significance of Alba’s support. “That’s how much that meant to me,” Bryan remarked, reflecting on their relationship and the mutual respect that has developed over the years. “We see each other when we can.”
With a strong commitment to his craft, Bryan released his eight-track EP on October 16, following the earlier triumph of his sixth studio album, *With Heaven on Top*, which came out in January. The inclusion of well-known artists in his latest project showcases how his career continues to evolve and gain recognition in the country music sphere.
As Bryan looks to the future, he has announced plans for his *Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs Tour*, set to kick off in April 2027. The tour promises to take him to major cities across the United States, Canada, and Australia, offering fans live performances of his new material and classic hits alike.
In addition to his touring schedule, Bryan is also working on an extensive memoir that will chronicle his experiences over the past decade. This upcoming book aims to provide deeper insights into the artist’s life, including his journey from Navy service member to a leading figure in the country music scene.
As Zach Bryan continues to make his mark in the music industry, it is clear that he carries the values and lessons learned during his time in the Navy with him. His story is not just one of personal achievement but also one that underscores the power of support and encouragement from mentors along the way.
