Faizan Zaki has clinched the prestigious title of the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion. The 13-year-old prodigy hails from Plano, Texas, and has secured the top position in the highly competitive spelling contest. Zaki’s remarkable victory in this year’s spellathon comes after finishing as the runner-up in the previous year’s edition.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee has announced that Zaki will be awarded $50,000 in cash, a $2,500 cash prize, and a reference library from Merriam-Webster. Additionally, he will receive $400 worth of reference works from Encyclopædia Britannica as part of his champion rewards. Zaki claimed the championship title by correctly spelling the word “éclaircissement” during the intense final round, as reported by The New York Times. This challenging term signifies “a clearing up of something obscure,” according to Merriam-Webster.
The 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee witnessed the participation of 243 talented students from various states across the United States, including the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe. Notably, contestants from international locations such as the Bahamas, Canada, Ghana, Kuwait, and Nigeria also competed to showcase their spelling prowess on a global platform. This year’s spellathon holds special significance as it marks the 100th year of the prestigious spelling competition.
The spelling bee event unfolded at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Maryland, where students and their families congregated for Bee Week, culminating in the grand centennial competition. The Scripps Cup, the coveted trophy, was up for grabs as participants navigated through the Preliminaries, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals segments of the competition. The thrilling contest, which commenced on May 27 and concluded with the final round broadcasted on May 29 on ION, garnered attention and admiration from spectators worldwide.
In a bid to promote knowledge and literacy among participants, the competition introduced a vocabulary round in 2021. This educational segment aims to enrich the contestants’ understanding of language and literature. The culminating segment, dubbed the “spell-off,” tests the finalists’ spelling acumen and determination as they compete for the top honours.
Last year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee showcased a gripping battle between 12-year-old Bruhat Soma and Faizan Zaki in a lightning tiebreaker round. Despite the stiff competition, Soma emerged victorious by correctly spelling 29 words within a 90-second tiebreaker period. The young champion from St. Petersburg, Fla., claimed the national title with the word “abseil,” denoting “a descent in mountaineering by means of a rope looped over a projection above,” as announced by the Scripps organization.
