A shocking story has emerged where a teenage girl managed to escape after allegedly being held captive and subjected to horrifying abuse, including being kept in a dog crate. The 18-year-old victim claimed that she had been forced to endure years of captivity in a New Jersey home, where she was also chained up and confined in a padlocked bathroom. The harrowing details of her ordeal have left authorities and the community in disbelief.

According to reports from the authorities, the victim’s mother, Brenda Spencer, aged 38, and her stepfather, Branndon Mosley, aged 41, have been arrested and are facing multiple charges in connection to the abuse. The abuse is said to have started around 2018 when the victim was removed from school and confined to her home at her mother’s discretion. She was reportedly kept in a dog crate for approximately a year before being moved to a padlocked bathroom and chained up.

The victim revealed that she was also forced to live in a bare room with minimal facilities, including just a bucket to use instead of a proper toilet. The room was equipped with an alarm system that would alert Spencer and Mosley if she tried to escape. It’s horrifying to imagine the conditions under which the victim was living, deprived of basic necessities and subjected to continuous abuse and control.
In addition to the physical confinement and deprivation, the victim also disclosed instances of physical and sexual abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of Mosley. The abuse reportedly continued for years until the victim managed to escape on May 8, 2025, with the help of a neighbour. The authorities uncovered more disturbing details when they searched the residence, revealing squalid conditions and numerous animals living alongside the victim.
The arrest of Spencer and Mosley came following a detailed investigation by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and Gloucester Township Police Department. The suspects have been charged with a range of offences, including kidnapping, conspiracy, aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal restraint, and possession of weapons for unlawful purposes. Mosley faces additional charges related to sexual assault.
The community has been left reeling from the shocking revelations, with many expressing disbelief and outrage at the inhumane treatment the victim endured. The authorities have highlighted the severity of the case, with Gloucester Township Police Chief David Harkins calling it “one of the most despicable cases” he has encountered. The swift action taken by law enforcement in apprehending the suspects has been crucial in ensuring justice for the victim.
As the investigation continues and the legal process unfolds, concerns remain about the welfare of the victim and the need for support services to assist her in recovering from the trauma she has endured. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in safeguarding against such heinous acts and the necessity of strong community support in protecting vulnerable individuals from abuse and exploitation.
