Florida Nurse Arrested for Allegedly Abusing Disabled Teen

A home health nurse in Florida, Nia Ayers, 24, has recently been arrested on charges of aggravated abuse of a disabled 18-year-old woman under her care. The distressing incident came to light after home security cameras captured footage of the nurse’s alleged mistreatment of the victim. St. Cloud Police Department issued a news release stating that Ayers was seen in the footage repeatedly taping the victim’s mouth shut, ripping off the tape, and shaking her breathing machine.
The victim, a quadriplegic woman diagnosed with cerebral palsy and unable to vocally communicate, reportedly suffered multiple assaults while in Ayers’ care. Apart from taping the victim’s mouth and shaking her breathing machine, the footage also showed Ayers covering the victim’s mouth with a washcloth. The victim’s mother became suspicious after noticing cuts and scrapes on her daughter’s face. Upon reviewing the home security footage, she immediately contacted the authorities.
Chief of Police Douglas Goerke described the incident as “a truly heinous act,” emphasising the vulnerability of the victim, who is completely defenceless and unable to seek help. Ayers surrendered herself to the St. Cloud Police on May 7 and was subsequently booked into the Osceola County Department of Corrections the following day. At present, she is being held without bond.
