A recent outbreak of Listeria infections spanning multiple states has resulted in the hospitalization of 10 individuals, as confirmed by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Fresh & Ready Foods, LLC, the company at the center of the outbreak, has taken voluntary measures to recall a variety of ready-to-eat sandwiches and snacks that have been linked to the spread of Listeria.

The FDA press release issued on May 11 brought attention to the fact that at least 10 people had been hospitalized due to Listeria monocytogenes infections. These individuals are believed to have consumed products associated with the outbreak. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported in connection with this incident.
Listeria infections can manifest in symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. The infection is especially concerning for pregnant women as it is known to cause miscarriages and stillbirths. The affected products were distributed under the brand names Fresh & Ready Foods, City Point Market Fresh Food to Go, and Fresh Take Crave Away.
These items were circulated between April 18 and 28 across Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington, with expiry dates falling between April 22 and May 19, 2025. The range of 86 products included salads, bistro boxes, and various snacks, all of which can be found listed on the FDA website for consumer reference.
The wide availability of these products, including at convenience stores, hospitals, hotels, airports, and airlines, heightened concerns over the scale of potential exposure to Listeria. An investigation was initiated in April after the presence of Listeria was detected at Fresh & Ready Foods’ facility in San Fernando, California. Genetic testing verified that the strain found at the facility matched those affecting consumers.
In response to the outbreak, consumers and businesses are advised against consuming, selling, or serving the recalled items and should discard them immediately. Additionally, thorough cleaning of surfaces and containers that may have come into contact with the contaminated products is recommended to prevent further spread of the bacteria.
This incident underscores the importance of vigilance in food safety practices to prevent the spread of harmful pathogens like Listeria. The swift action taken by Fresh & Ready Foods in recalling the implicated products demonstrates a commitment to public health and safety.
As authorities investigate the root cause of the outbreak and work to mitigate its impact, it serves as a reminder for both businesses and consumers to remain vigilant and proactive in food safety measures. By staying informed and adhering to recommended guidelines, individuals can play a crucial role in preventing similar incidents in the future.
