Pope Leo XIV Leads First Mass with Cardinals Following Conclave

The newest pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, recently led his inaugural Mass in the illustrious Sistine Chapel, beckoning over 130 cardinals to partake in the grand occasion. Amidst the splendour of the event, the BBC reported that the ceremony unfolded on May 9, with Pope Leo’s ascension taking place the previous day after a rigorous two-day conclave.
During the Mass, Pope Leo XIV conveyed his reverence by kissing the chapel’s altar and engaging in a symbolic act of walking around it with incense as the clock struck 11 a.m. local time. The pontiff proceeded to lead a prayer seeking forgiveness and repentance for sins, followed by a congregation-led hymn and a period of worship.
In a poignant address to the cardinals, Pope Leo expressed gratitude, stating, “Through the Ministry of Peter, you have called me to carry that cross and to be blessed with that mission, and I know I can rely on each and every one of you to walk with me as we continue as a Church.” He emphasised the importance of unity and spreading the Gospel message to combat the challenges faced by believers in contemporary society.
The newly appointed pontiff, formerly known as Robert Francis Prevost, hails from Chicago, United States. Before his papal election, Pope Leo XIV served as the Bishop of Chiclayo and as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. His various roles were bestowed upon him by his predecessor, the late Pope Francis, culminating in his cardinal appointment in 2023 and subsequent possession in early 2024.
Distinguished by his Peruvian-American heritage, Pope Leo XIV represents a significant milestone as the first American pontiff and the inaugural Augustinian pope. By adopting the papal moniker of Leo, he pays homage to St. Leo I, an influential figure in Catholic history. In a resounding declaration from his first speech, Pope Leo XIV advocated for a synodal church that advocates for peace, justice, and compassion, particularly towards those enduring hardship.
