Sheryl Lee Ralph Marks Success of Scholastic Literacy Programme Expansion

Renowned actress Sheryl Lee Ralph recently joined hands with Pennsylvania State Legislature to celebrate the expansion of the Scholastic Literacy Programme, highlighting the significance of reading in education. The United States of Readers programme, which aspires to close the literacy gap and distribute free books, aims to benefit approximately 3,500 high Title I students across five school districts in Pennsylvania.

Senator Vincent Hughes, along with Sheryl Lee Ralph, were seen at the special event on the 7th of May, posing with students and Scholastic’s Chief Operating Officer, Judy Newman. Ralph, known for her roles in both TV and film, including the hit series “Abbott Elementary,” expressed her enthusiasm for promoting education for all children, emphasizing the importance of literacy.

The United States of Readers initiative, developed in collaboration with classroom teachers, focuses on high Title I schools and rural areas to provide students with books that interest and motivate them. The programme offers a selection of age-appropriate books for students from Pre-K to eighth grade to build their home libraries. In Pennsylvania, the programme currently supports nearly 3,500 students in five school districts.

Scholastic’s Chief Impact Officer, Judy Newman, shared that Pennsylvania’s decision to join the programme was met with excitement as they acknowledged the need to reach children in high-need communities. Students participating in the programme have the opportunity to select 10 books annually for their personal libraries, while teachers receive 25 books for their classroom libraries.

Literacy holds a special place in Ralph’s heart, stemming from her upbringing in a family of educators, where books were a constant source of learning and imagination. Joining the cast of “Abbott Elementary” as a dedicated teacher further fuels Ralph’s passion for promoting education. The event saw students receiving two free Abbott Elementary books, reinforcing the joy of reading.

Pennsylvania becomes the second state to implement the United States of Readers programme, with plans for a nationwide expansion in the works. Following a successful pilot in Massachusetts, funded by author James Patterson, the initiative aims to nurture students’ confidence and individual reading identities. Newman emphasises that encouraging reading habits from a young age is vital for educational growth.

As Sheryl Lee Ralph aptly puts it, “Reading is definitely fundamental.” Recognising the impact of education on all children, Ralph, along with state legislators and Scholastic, continues to champion the cause of literacy. With a focus on empowering students through books, the United States of Readers programme sets a positive precedent for educational initiatives nationwide.
