Alligator Grabs Woman Out of Canoe in Front of Her Husband, Then Her Body Is Spotted Floating in Lake

A tragic incident unfolded on May 6th in Florida when a woman lost her life in an alligator attack while out canoeing with her husband. The couple was navigating near the mouth of Tiger Creek into Lake Kissimmee when the terrifying encounter with the alligator took place. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was later found deceased after the attack. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission swiftly responded to the reported incident, which occurred in Polk County.

Authorities revealed that the woman was in a canoe when she came into contact with the alligator and subsequently fell into the water. Despite efforts to fight off the alligator, tragically the attack proved fatal for the woman. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, alongside members of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and other emergency responders, quickly arrived at the scene. A contracted nuisance alligator trapper was also called in to assist in addressing the situation.

Reports indicate that the husband tried valiantly to fend off the alligator as it grabbed his wife out of the canoe. Authorities shared that the last known location of the victim was marked by the paddle left behind by the husband. A helicopter dispatched to the area later spotted the victim’s body floating in the water, which was then recovered by officers. As investigations continue, the victim’s identity has not been made public.

Lake Kissimmee, where the tragic incident occurred, covers a vast area across Polk and Osceola counties and is known to have a substantial population of alligators, as reported by Fox affiliate WTVT. Statistics from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reveal that between 1948 and 2024, the state has documented 487 unprovoked alligator bites on humans, with 27 of these incidents resulting in fatalities.
