Smith Packing LLC is recalling nearly 19,000 pounds of meat and poultry products following customer complaints regarding the taste and color of the items. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service initiated the recall after reports indicated that sodium nitrite levels exceeded the regulatory limit. The company first became aware of the issue when consumers raised concerns about products being off-taste and off-color.

The primary distributor of Smith Packing, Palmer Foods, took immediate action upon discovering the problem with the products. Palmer Foods promptly halted production, notified the USDA, and identified an excessive amount of a curing agent in the recalled meat. About 90% of the affected products did not leave the warehouse, with approximately 34 customers receiving potentially inedible meats. The distributor is actively working to recover and dispose of any affected products in collaboration with the USDA.

The recall encompasses various ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meat and poultry items manufactured by Smith Packing between February 19 and April 24. Brands affected by the recall include As-Salaam, Smith Packing, Honest John, and Beefland USA. The FSIS has published a list of 16 products subject to the recall, which bear the establishment number “EST. 4578” or “P-4578” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These products were distributed in New York, and consumers are urged to discard or return them to the point of purchase.
While there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consuming these products, the FSIS emphasises the importance of consumer vigilance. The agency is concerned that some of the recalled items may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Thus, consumers and institutions that have purchased these items are advised not to consume them and should follow disposal guidelines provided by the FSIS.
Palmer Foods, the distributor involved in the recall, has reassured the public that no consumers have reported illness related to the consumption of the affected products. The company is committed to complying with USDA guidelines and procedures to guarantee food safety. Palmer Foods attributes the swift identification and mitigation of the issue to the stringent safety practices enforced across its manufacturing lines.
As the investigation continues, individuals who believe they may have consumed the recalled products and are experiencing health concerns are advised to consult their healthcare providers. This incident serves as a reminder of the vital role played by regulatory bodies and distributors in ensuring the safety and quality of food products available to consumers. It underscores the importance of prompt action and transparent communication in response to product quality issues.
In conclusion, food safety remains a top priority, and collaborative efforts between producers, distributors, regulatory agencies, and consumers are crucial in upholding industry standards and safeguarding public health. It is essential for companies to maintain stringent quality control measures to prevent similar incidents in the future and to prioritize transparency and accountability in addressing product recalls.
