During the filming of BritBox’s murder mystery “Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero,” Matthew Rhys, 50, shared his nervousness about working with the legendary actress Anjelica Huston for the first time. Rhys, speaking exclusively to PEOPLE, expressed his intimidation, considering the rarity of Hollywood dynasties like the Hustons, who are the only family with three generations of Oscar winners.

Rhys, known for his role in the series “The Americans,” revealed his admiration for Huston, having grown up watching both her father John Huston’s films and her own. Reflecting on his experience, Rhys recalled a moment where he was watching Huston in the 1990 film “The Witches” with his son Sam, 8, and was struck by her talent.
Despite his admiration, Rhys felt too shy to approach Huston for a photo, even though he believed it would have delighted his son. This hesitation to engage in such interactions stemmed from his deep respect for the veteran actress and her illustrious career.
While on set, Rhys observed that Huston exuded mischief and still had a twinkle in her eye. He described himself as shy and quiet around her, ensuring he maintained proper decorum and refrained from saying anything that could potentially embarrass himself. Despite having only a few scenes with her, Rhys cherished the opportunity to work alongside such a talented and iconic actress.
In “Towards Zero,” Rhys portrays a troubled detective entangled in a complex narrative of jealousy, deceit, and dysfunction. Amidst the star-studded cast and the nuanced storyline, Rhys appreciated the luxury of being the last one in for makeup, allowing him a few moments of relaxation before filming.
Rhys’s usual routine of not being apart from his partner, actress Keri Russell, for more than three weeks was broken during the shooting of the series. However, the couple managed to stay connected through regular FaceTime sessions, highlighting the importance of communication and support in sustaining their relationship amidst work commitments.
“Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero” is now available on BritBox, offering viewers a thrilling narrative and remarkable performances from talents like Rhys and Huston. The series promises an immersive experience into the world of mystery and intrigue, guided by the exceptional chemistry and dedication of its cast and crew.
As Rhys navigated his role and interactions with Huston on set, he showcased a deep admiration for her craft and a genuine humility in approaching their shared scenes. His candid reflections offer a glimpse into the world of Hollywood collaborations and the dynamics that drive captivating on-screen performances.
