71-year-old Yunice Abbas, one of the individuals currently on trial for the armed robbery of Kim Kardashian during Paris Fashion Week in 2016, has come forward to publicly acknowledge his involvement in the crime and express regret for the trauma it inflicted. Testifying in court on Tuesday, Abbas stated, “I regret it, not because I got caught, but because … there was a trauma,” as reported by NBC News. Abbas gained notoriety after co-authoring the book “I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian” in 2021, where he revealed himself as one of the robbers involved in the heist. Despite this, Abbas now claims that he did not play a part in selecting the book’s title, which he believes misrepresents his role in the incident. Contrary to the narrative in his book, Abbas asserts that he did not enter Kardashian’s hotel room at the No Address hotel in Paris but instead kept watch in a separate location, according to NBC.

The heist, orchestrated by five masked men, saw Kardashian held at gunpoint and bound as the perpetrators stole jewellery amounting to nearly $9 million in October 2016, as per reports from the New York Times. A source close to Kardashian revealed at the time that she managed to free herself by escaping from the zip ties and alerting others by screaming for help from a balcony. Among the items stolen were two diamond Cartier bracelets, a gold and diamond Jacob necklace, Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings, a gold Rolex watch, and a $4 million ring gifted by Kanye West, as detailed by French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. Regrettably, most of the stolen jewellery remains unrecovered to this day.

French authorities initially apprehended 17 suspects across France in connection with the armed robbery in January 2017. Of the 10 individuals currently on trial, half are classified as alleged accomplices, including the younger brother of Kardashian’s Paris chauffeur. Referred to as the “Grandpa robbers” by French media due to their advanced age and criminal records, the group faces legal proceedings related to their involvement in the high-profile heist, according to ABC News.
During his court appearance, Abbas disclosed details about his previous incarcerations for crimes such as armed robbery in Belgium, citing negative influences and the desire to provide for his children as motivations for his criminal activities, as per NBC News. Despite his remorseful sentiments, Abbas and his co-defendants continue to be embroiled in legal proceedings, with potential ramifications for their roles in the robbery. Kardashian, who is now 44, is anticipated to offer her testimony in person during the trial, having previously expressed beliefs that the perpetrators targeted her based on her social media presence.
In a 2017 episode of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” Kardashian speculated that her social media updates announcing her location inadvertently tipped off the robbers, revealing vulnerabilities in her security arrangements. The ongoing trial sheds light on the complexities and lasting impact of the robbery on both Kardashian and the defendants involved, underscoring the gravity of the situation for all parties. The case serves as a somber reminder of the consequences of criminal actions and the enduring repercussions faced by victims of such traumatic events.
