The cast of the beloved Broadway musical, Swept Away, came together for a special one-night-only reunion concert, bringing back the magic of the show for fans. The event, which featured the musical talents of The Avett Brothers, took place at the iconic Bowery Ballroom in New York City. Despite its short run on Broadway with just 20 preview performances and 48 regular shows before its closure on Dec. 29, 2004, Swept Away garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated following, earning a spot on various year-end “Best of” lists.
The reunion concert featured original cast members who delighted audiences with two performances – one at 7 p.m. and another at 9:45 p.m., both of which played to sold-out crowds. The principal cast members, including Tony Award winner John Gallagher Jr., Tony nominee Stark Sands, Adrian Blake Enscoe, and Wayne Duvall, were joined by other ensemble members to bring the musical back to life for a memorable evening.

Inspired by a real-life 1884 shipwreck off the Cape of Good Hope, Swept Away is based on The Avett Brothers’ 2004 album, Mignonette. The musical’s score, featuring songs from the band, was expertly adapted by Tony-winning writer John Logan, who also incorporated a new song, “Lord Lay Your Hand on My Shoulder,” written by The Avett Brothers specifically for the show. The action of the musical was relocated to New Bedford, Massachusetts, adding a unique twist to the original story.
Throughout its Broadway run, Swept Away saw appearances by The Avett Brothers themselves, who performed some of their popular hits live for the audience after the curtain fell. The show served as the Broadway debut for several cast members and boasted a creative team that included award-winning choreographers, set and costume designers, and music arrangers, all contributing to the immersive experience of the production.
For those who were unable to attend the reunion concert, the original Broadway cast recording of Swept Away remains available for fans to enjoy the timeless music and story of the show. Released on Feb. 7, the album was later released in a double vinyl version on April 25, allowing audiences to relive the magic of Swept Away from the comfort of their homes.

The success of the Swept Away reunion concert serves as a testament to the enduring impact of the musical and the camaraderie of its cast members.
