Lulu Roman, a well-loved personality from the iconic show Hee Haw and a talented gospel singer, has sadly passed away at the age of 78. The news of her demise was confirmed by a close friend of the actress, who was a key figure on the long-running comedy sketch series. Lulu’s son, Damon Roman, shared with The Hollywood Reporter that his mother breathed her last on Wednesday, April 23, in Bellingham, Wash., where she had moved to live with Damon in the previous year.

Reflecting on the life of Lulu Roman, her former publicist Ben Laurro shared with PEOPLE that she was a remarkable individual who had faced and triumphed over many challenges, which in turn equipped her to bring joy to others. Lulu, born Bertha Louise Hable, had once mentioned that she was hired for the role of the “fat girl” on Hee Haw but underwent a remarkable transformation by shedding 200 lbs. after the show concluded. Her health journey was a topic she openly discussed on The 700 Club back in 2010.

The year 1942 marked the arrival of Lulu Roman into this world in a home for unwed mothers before she was left at a Dallas orphanage during her childhood. Battling a thyroid condition led to her struggling with weight issues, making her a target for teasing during her formative years. Unfortunately, Lulu aged out of the adoption system without ever being adopted, as shared by her publicist, Ben Laurro.
Despite facing numerous obstacles, Lulu Roman’s ability to uplift people’s spirits through laughter was unparalleled. This unique talent propelled her to fame and saw her forming a close relationship with country music legend Buck Owens, who appreciated her humour and helped her secure a prominent role on Hee Haw. The show went on to enjoy a successful 23-season run after its launch in 1969, firmly establishing Lulu as a household name.
However, as life unfolded, Lulu encountered struggles with substance abuse, leading to her departure from Hee Haw in 1971. Her path to redemption came when she embraced Christianity in 1973, a decision that significantly influenced the trajectory of her life. In 1999, Lulu was rightfully inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and in 2019, she penned a memoir, chronicling her life’s journey.
Beyond her Hee Haw days, Lulu Roman also graced the small screen with appearances in shows like The Love Boat and Touched by an Angel, showcasing her diverse talents. She even ventured into the film industry, featuring in the 1972 action thriller Corky alongside Robert Blake. Colleague Misty Rowe fondly recalled the time spent with Lulu and expressed gratitude for having had her presence in life.
Lulu’s profound love for God, compassion for others, and unwavering dedication to her sons were defining aspects of her character. Her younger son’s passing in 2017 was a tremendous loss for her, showcasing the depth of her resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Lulu Roman’s legacy as a beacon of kindness and empathy for those in pain or loneliness will endure, as echoed by her former publicist Ben Laurro.
As the world mourns the loss of Lulu Roman, a true entertainment gem, her impact on those who knew her personally or through her work is immeasurable. While the cause of her death remains undisclosed, her memory lives on through the many lives she touched. The legacy she leaves behind serves as a poignant reminder of the power of laughter, faith, and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
