High school musicians in Iowa recently came together to honour a band director’s late daughter with a heartwarming tribute. Students from two high schools in Johnston, Iowa, collaborated to debut a special piece of music titled “Anna’s Gift,” as reported by CBS affiliate KCCI-TV. The performance was dedicated to Anna Heeren, the daughter of Johnston High School band director, Jason Heeren, who tragically passed away at the age of 15 in May 2022 after battling bilateral thalamic glioma brain tumours.

After the students at Johnston and Dallas Center-Grimes high schools conceived the idea of commissioning a musical piece in memory of Anna, Jason reached out to composer Andrew Boysen Jr. to bring the homage to life. Describing Anna as a vibrant and talented young lady with a sunny personality, Jason shared with KCCI that she was not only a beautiful singer but also excelled as a clarinet and piano player.
On the day of the performance, members of the DC-G 11-2 concert band and the Johnston High School wind symphony united on stage to deliver the emotional tribute. Jason expressed the lasting impact of music in preserving memories, stating, “If there’s one way that you can truly remember someone forever, it’s through music. And this is going to be with us forever.”
In addition to her musical talents, Anna was actively involved in various activities including church, softball, soccer, and cross country, as detailed in her obituary. Her love for school was evident from a young age, accompanying her father to his band room and later to the football fields where he directed the marching band.
The creation of “Anna’s Gift” serves as a poignant reminder for Jason of his vibrant daughter, a token of gratitude and a cherished keepsake that holds significant meaning to him. Reflecting on the tribute, he expressed his appreciation, saying, “Very grateful for this opportunity and for this gift. It really means a lot.”
As the Johnston community came together through music to honour the memory of Anna Heeren, the power of art and remembrance shone brightly. The collaboration between the high school musicians exemplified the strength of unity and compassion in commemorating a life that continues to inspire and resonate with all those touched by her story.
The touching tribute not only immortalised Anna’s spirit but also highlighted the importance of coming together in times of loss to celebrate cherished memories and preserve the legacy of loved ones. The dedication and heartfelt performance of “Anna’s Gift” not only honoured her memory but also showcased the profound impact of music in healing and remembering those we have lost.
In a poignant display of love and remembrance, the high school musicians paid a heartfelt tribute to Anna Heeren, ensuring that her memory and legacy live on through the power of music. The unity and empathy displayed in this musical tribute serve as a testament to the enduring impact of community support and shared remembrance in times of sorrow.
