GOP Senator’s Comments on Violence Against Journalists Ignite Controversy

Oklahoma Republican Senator, Markwayne Mullin, caused a stir with his recent remarks suggesting that violence against journalists could act as a deterrent to what he referred to as ‘fake news’. The Senator made these comments in a video posted on Saturday, April 5, where he discussed a historical incident dating back to 1890 involving a reporter and a congressman.
In the video, Mullin recounted the story of reporter Charles Kincaid who shot and killed Rep. William Taulbee on the steps of the House of Representatives. Mullin insinuated that journalists would be less inclined to publish what he termed as ‘false stories’ or ‘fake news’ if they risked facing consequences like in the historical case he mentioned.
The altercation between Kincaid and Taulbee stemmed from a critical story written by Kincaid about Taulbee’s extramarital affair. Despite the violent outcome, Kincaid was later acquitted on grounds of self-defense, as reported by Politico. Mullin faced backlash for seemingly endorsing violence as a means to combat misinformation.
Senator Mullin clarified that his comments were meant in jest and also referenced an earlier ‘joke’ he made about settling political disputes with caning. Caning, a practice of beating an individual with a cane, was common in the past but has since been phased out.
