In April, astronomy enthusiasts will be treated to a rare celestial event as two meteor showers are set to light up the night skies simultaneously. Amidst the usual April showers, stargazers are in for a spectacular show as meteor showers and other celestial events take centre stage throughout the month, promising an exciting period of skywatching in the northern hemisphere.

Meteor showers occur when numerous meteoroids, also known as space rocks, enter Earth’s atmosphere, creating the illusion of “shooting stars” as the glowing hot air surrounds them due to high-speed movement. This month, skywatchers can look forward to witnessing meteors from the Lyrids and Eta Aquarids showers grace the night sky in a dazzling display. The Lyrids, originating from Comet Thatcher, will offer around 18 meteors per hour, while the Eta Aquarids, born from Comet Halley, are expected to have up to 50 meteors per hour at their peak.

During this period, skywatchers can anticipate witnessing 10 to 20 Lyrid meteors per hour, making it an ideal time to witness this cosmic spectacle. To catch a glimpse of the Lyrid meteor shower, enthusiasts in the northern hemisphere should look towards the sky after dark and before dawn, away from the glare of city lights, for optimal viewing conditions.
For those looking forward to the Eta Aquarids shower, known for its rapid meteors leaving glowing streaks of light in their wake, the peak activity is forecasted to occur between April 20 and May 21, with the highest meteor rates expected on May 3 and 4. While the Eta Aquarids are more prominently visible in the southern hemisphere due to their elevated position in the sky, viewers in the northern hemisphere can still expect to witness up to 10 meteors per hour, known as “Earthgrazers,” with clear skies and minimal light pollution enhancing the viewing experience.
