Justin Baldoni Responds to Blake Lively’s Attempt to Dismiss His Lawsuit

Actor Justin Baldoni has made a legal move in response to actress Blake Lively’s motion to dismiss his countersuit. The ongoing legal battle between the two Hollywood figures has taken another turn as Baldoni fights to uphold his defamation claim against Lively.
Baldoni initially filed a $400 million lawsuit against Lively on grounds of defamation and other allegations on January 16. This action came shortly after Lively had filed a lawsuit accusing Baldoni of sexual harassment and orchestrating a retaliatory smear campaign. The conflict between the two arose during their collaboration on the movie “It Ends with Us,” where Baldoni served as the director alongside Lively as the lead actress. The film was released in theatres on August 9, 2024.
In response to Lively’s legal team, who submitted a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on March 20, Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, submitted a detailed rebuttal in the Southern District of New York on April 3. Freedman argued that Lively’s motion to dismiss was unfounded, citing specific claims of defamation against his client that he believes are strong enough to counter a dismissal.
Freedman further contested Lively’s request for attorneys’ fees, costs, damages, and punitive damages, asserting that Baldoni’s lawsuit presents a meticulous account of Lively’s actions to manipulate and defame him and his production team. He emphasised that the legal system should not shield Lively from accountability for her alleged wrongful acts.
The response from Baldoni’s legal team also addressed the California Civil Code Section 47.1, which prohibits retaliatory lawsuits associated with public disclosures of sexual harassment. Freedman argued that enforcing this provision would require absolving Lively of culpability, which he adamantly opposes in defense of his client.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Freedman condemned Lively’s attempts to dismiss the lawsuit as an infringement on Baldoni’s constitutional right to seek justice and clear his name from false accusations. He underscored the importance of upholding the First Amendment rights of individuals facing baseless claims and vowed to continue the legal battle to safeguard these principles.
As the case unfolds, the public watches closely as two prominent figures in the entertainment industry navigate a complex legal dispute that delves into issues of power dynamics, accountability, and the pursuit of justice.
