A Florida grandmother has been handed a five-year prison sentence for the tragic death of her 7-month-old granddaughter, who passed away after being left in a hot car. Tracy Nix, 67, faced the sentencing in Hardee County, Florida, where she was found guilty of leaving the infant unattended in a vehicle. While Nix was acquitted of aggravated manslaughter charges, the court determined her negligence led to the child’s untimely demise.

The incident took place in November 2022 when Nix’s granddaughter, Uriel Schock, lost her life while in Nix’s care. The infant was inadvertently left in an SUV with closed windows as temperatures soared to 90 degrees in Wauchula, Florida. Nix reportedly confessed to authorities that she had “just forgot” about the child after returning from a lunch outing with friends.

Despite efforts to revive Uriel by her husband upon discovery in the car, the infant could not be saved. Nix opted not to testify during the trial but spoke out during the sentencing, expressing deep regret over the tragedy. The emotional courtroom scene also saw Uriel’s mother, Kaila Nix-Schock, addressing her mother, stating her conflicting emotions and the impact of the loss on their family.

This heartbreaking incident was not the first tragedy to strike the family, as in 2021, Uriel’s 16-month-old brother, Ezra, also died while under Nix’s care. The toddler drowned in a nearby lake while Nix, a former school principal, was asleep. However, Nix was not charged in relation to Ezra’s death due to insufficient evidence of negligence.
