Former Federal Prosecutor Jessica Aber Likely Died of Natural Causes: Police

Jessica Aber, a former federal prosecutor who resigned on the day that President Donald Trump took office for the second time earlier this year, has likely died of “natural causes,” according to a statement from the Alexandria Police Department (APD). Aber, aged 43, was found deceased at a residence in Alexandria, Va., on Saturday, March 22, around 9:18 a.m. local time. The police confirmed in a statement.
A police update on March 25 stated, “While the investigation into the death of Ms. Jessica Aber is ongoing, at this time, detectives have found no evidence suggesting that her death was caused by anything other than natural causes.” The case will remain open until the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) provides a final ruling on the cause and manner of death. The police also asked for respecting the privacy of Aber’s family during this difficult time.
According to a family friend speaking to NBC News, police suspect Aber may have “died because of a long-standing medical issue.” Police responded to a report of an unresponsive woman at a residence on Beverly Drive on Saturday morning, where they found Aber and pronounced her dead at the scene. It is not clear if the property belonged to Aber or who initially alerted the authorities.
Jessica Aber was nominated for U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA) by Joe Biden in August 2021. She was unanimously confirmed by the Senate that same year. Aber had a distinguished career, starting at the Department of Justice (DOJ) as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in 2009, handling cases involving financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and child exploitation. She had also served as the Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division for EDVA.
Erik Siebert, the current U.S. Attorney for the EDVA, expressed his condolences on social media, describing Aber as an exceptional leader, mentor, and prosecutor. He mentioned that the office was devastated by the loss of Aber’s irreplaceable presence. Aber had obtained her law degree from William & Mary Law School in 2006 and had been a dedicated public servant throughout her career.
