The daughter of a victim of the 9/11 terrorist attacks has spoken out against the popular online marketplace, Etsy, for selling a Garfield-themed T-shirt that she found highly offensive and insensitive to the tragedy. Amy Stabile, who lost her father on that fateful day in 2001, expressed her shock and dismay upon encountering an advertisement for the T-shirt that depicted the beloved cartoon cat flying an airplane into lasagna towers resembling the World Trade Center Twin Towers.

Stabile, in an interview with Fox 5 New York, shared her disbelief at the blatant disregard for the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the 9/11 attacks. The T-shirt bore the message, “9/11? Yeah! I’ll take 911 … orders of lasagna!” which further exacerbated the insensitivity of the design. The image struck a chord with Stabile as it directly impacted her family, with her father being among the victims who perished in the terrorist act.

The seller of the offensive T-shirts, known as NelliesNestStore, operates out of Australia but ships from North Carolina. The store, which describes itself as offering “Silly Merch for Silly Dudes,” boasted a five-star rating before eventually removing the controversial items from its listings following public backlash. Etsy, the platform through which the T-shirts were being sold, has been urged to reevaluate its policies regarding the promotion of hate and violence.

Etsy’s stance on the issue has been met with criticism, as the company has defended the notion of subjective humor while maintaining that the T-shirts did not violate their guidelines. Stabile has called for stricter regulations and accountability on the part of the online marketplace to prevent such distasteful products from being circulated. She emphasised the need for companies to consider the ethical implications of the products they endorse and profit from, especially when it involves sensitive topics like terrorism.
In response to the growing controversy, an Etsy spokesperson assured that they would review the matter to prevent similar products from being advertised on their platform in the future. Stabile’s advocacy for the families of 9/11 victims has garnered support from the public, with many echoing her sentiments regarding the need for compassion and respect in the marketplace. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the responsibility of companies in upholding ethical standards and showing sensitivity towards tragic events that have profound effects on individuals and communities.
As the debate surrounding the appropriateness of the Garfield T-shirt continues, Stabile remains steadfast in her demand for accountability and empathy from corporations like Etsy. The incident serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of the 9/11 attacks and the importance of honouring the memories of the victims with dignity and respect. It also underscores the power of individuals like Stabile in advocating for meaningful change and fostering a culture of compassion in the face of adversity.
