Netflix is set to release a new docuseries titled Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing, shedding light on young influencers in the digital sphere. Premiering on April 9, the three-part series delves into the world of Piper Rockelle, a 17-year-old social media star known for her presence on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. With a significant following, Rockelle garnered attention through prank videos, trending challenges, and glimpses into the lives of her friends, who make up her “Squad.”

However, as Bad Influence reveals, Rockelle’s Squad consists of carefully selected child actors, some of whom share unsettling experiences involving the star’s mother and manager, Tiffany Smith. Allegations of emotional, physical, and even sexual abuse surfaced in January 2022 when 11 teen content creators filed a complaint against Smith. This led to a lawsuit that concluded in October 2024 with a $1.85 million settlement, although no admission of liability was made.
In response to the legal battle, Smith expressed relief that the ordeal is behind them, stating that the decision to settle was made to prioritize the mental health of all parties involved, especially Rockelle, who faced intense scrutiny and hurtful claims. Rockelle herself described the experience as painful and challenging, pointing out the relentless and damaging coverage by the media and on social platforms.
The Netflix series features testimonies from Rockelle’s co-stars, detailing instances of exploitation, manipulation, and abuse orchestrated by Smith. The trailer indicates how Smith encouraged the children to engage in behaviour deemed inappropriate to garner views, with one commentator likening the group to a cult. Moreover, the documentary questions the ethics of exposing children to a predominantly adult audience on online platforms.
Despite the outward appearance of innocence, the reality behind the scenes was far more troubling, as disclosed in the trailer. The allure of fame and financial gain brought in substantial earnings for Rockelle, with reports indicating monthly earnings of around $500,000. Concerns regarding the welfare of child influencers and the hazards of their online presence are highlighted in the documentary, warning of potential exploitation and future repercussions.
The expose in Bad Influence raises crucial discussions about the protection of underage influencers and the responsibilities of platforms and guardians in ensuring their well-being. As the boundaries of social media continue to blur, the need for safeguards and regulations to shield young content creators from harm becomes increasingly urgent. The series serves as a stark reminder of the darker side of the digital realm and the imperative for vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable individuals in the online landscape.
