A well-known Chinese restaurant chain has found itself at the center of controversy after reports emerged that two diners urinated in a soup pot while dining at one of their establishments. Haidilao, renowned for its hotpot offerings, has pledged to make amends following the disturbing incident that took place in Shanghai.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of February 24th, saw two men urinate in the hotpot broth after dining in a private room at the restaurant’s Shanghai location. The management of Haidilao admitted that they were unprepared to handle such a situation, as their staff were unable to detect any anomalies or maintain the dining environment’s safety.

Hotpot, a popular dish served at the restaurant, involves a large pot filled with broth where customers can cook meats, vegetables, and other ingredients. While the broth is usually replaced for each new customer, concerns have been raised about whether the pot was adequately sanitized before further use.
In response to the public outrage generated by a viral video of the incident, Haidilao has offered refunds to customers who patronized the downtown Shanghai branch between February 24th and March 8th. Over 4,000 diners are set to receive compensation for their unpleasant experience at the restaurant.

Acknowledging the distress caused to their patrons, Haidilao expressed regret, stating, “We fully understand that the distress caused to our customers by this incident cannot be fully compensated for by any means. We are willing to do our utmost to take responsibility.”
Super Hi International, the company behind Haidilao, has not immediately responded to inquiries regarding the incident. The restaurant chain has reported the matter to the police in Jianyang, Sichuan, where its headquarters are based, as well as to other relevant authorities.
Law enforcement in Shanghai has confirmed that two 17-year-old men, identified by the surnames Tang and Wu, have been detained administratively in connection with the incident. Haidilao has taken further steps by filing a civil lawsuit against the individuals to address the repercussions of their actions.
Established in 1994, Haidilao has grown to become a prominent Chinese cuisine brand, known for its exceptional customer service and unique dining experience. With over 1,000 restaurants worldwide, the chain has established a global presence, operating in 13 countries across four continents.
As the restaurant works to rebuild its reputation following this unfortunate incident, customers and industry observers alike will be watching closely to see how Haidilao addresses the fallout and upholds its commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable dining experience for all.
In conclusion, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by businesses in managing unexpected situations and maintaining the trust of their customers. Moving forward, it will be crucial for Haidilao to implement robust protocols and training to prevent similar incidents and ensure the well-being of their patrons.
