Journalists at a Florida news station had a terrifying moment when they experienced a tornado live on air during a broadcast. WOFL-TV meteorologist Brooks Garner was in the middle of warning residents in Orlando and surrounding areas to be on high alert for tornado activity when the newsroom was hit by a tornado on Monday, March 10.
Garner urgently shouted to his coworkers to seek shelter as storm cameras captured debris being tossed around by strong gusts of wind and rain around 9:30 a.m. local time. The meteorologist instructed everyone to get under their desks for safety as an EF2 tornado passed through Seminole County, causing damage in Lake Mary, as reported by the news station.
An EF2 tornado, as classified on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, is considered strong and can reach speeds between 111 mph to 135 mph. Garner emphasised the seriousness of the situation as the tornado hit their station, with the building’s power even starting to flicker during the broadcast.
Despite the chaos, Garner maintained his composure on camera, guiding viewers and staff to safety throughout the ordeal. The footage of the live tornado encounter quickly went viral, with viewers praising Garner for his professionalism under pressure. The incident, though frightening, fortunately did not result in any fatalities.
The tornado’s impact led to damage in the area, including a collapsed home in Longwood, overturned cars, trees blocking roads, and downed power lines. Remarkably, the part of the collapsed home where the residents sought shelter remained intact, highlighting the importance of taking safety precautions during severe weather events.
Approximately 500 people experienced power outages as a result of the tornado. Alan Harris, spokesperson for Seminole County Emergency Management, commended the residents who followed safety protocols and sought shelter, emphasising the significance of being prepared for such emergencies.
