The body of a beloved Atlanta teacher, Gary Jones, has been discovered one month after he disappeared on a boating trip with his fiancée on Georgia’s Lake Oconee. Reports from local media outlets, including Fox 5 Atlanta and WGXA News, confirmed that Jones was found on Sunday, March 9th.
Gary Jones and his fiancée, Joycelyn Wilson, went missing on February 8th during a boat trip on Lake Oconee. Joycelyn Wilson’s body was found the following day, not far from where Gary’s body was later discovered. Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills informed The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Gary’s body was found in around 45 feet of water.
It was reported that Gary’s family had enlisted the help of search-and-recovery expert Keith Cormican from Wisconsin to aid in the search. Using underwater sonar technology, Cormican and Sheriff Sills were able to locate Gary’s body about 75 to 100 yards away from where Joycelyn was found, leading to the recovery operation at 1 p.m. local time that day.
The couple had been celebrating Gary’s 50th birthday at the lake on the day they went missing, with their unoccupied boat being found near the lake’s dam and their belongings later recovered. Despite extensive search efforts involving multiple states’ resources, inclement weather conditions had previously forced a temporary suspension of the search mission.
Sheriff Sills expressed that while the cause of Gary’s death remains undetermined, signs point towards a boating accident as the likely scenario. The tragedy has left the community in mourning, as Gary and Joycelyn were reportedly set to get married this month and were residing at a local hotel at the time of the incident.
