A heartwarming story emerged of a woman who found herself on an emotional rollercoaster, as she helped deliver her grandchild in a car just hours after the passing of her own mother. Elissa West stepped in to assist her daughter Alysa in giving birth to a baby boy in a parking lot, following a sudden onset of labour while enjoying lunch at their home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey on February 25. As the dramatic turn of events unfolded, Elissa quickly realised that her daughter would not make it to the hospital in time for the birth. In a moment of high intensity, Alysa began screaming that her water had broken, prompting Elissa to take charge. After calling 911, they pulled over into a parking lot on Kingston Drive, where Elissa had to step in to deliver her grandchild. With urgency in the air, she recounted to WPVI, “I jumped out of the car. 911 says, ‘Do you see anything?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I can see the head.’ Within seconds, the top of the baby’s head popped out, and a couple of seconds later, I just said, ‘Give me a little push,’ and out he came, and I caught him.”
Albeit a challenging day, Baby Noah’s arrival brought a ray of light amidst the grief of losing Elissa’s mother to leukemia. Reflecting on the bittersweet experience, Elissa shared with WPVI, “It was very sad about my mother, but I think that this baby was sent as a distraction because he certainly distracted all of us from our day.” The newborn grandson became a source of comfort and healing for the family in the midst of their loss.
Paramedics from Virtua Health in Cherry Hill arrived at the scene just moments before the baby made his entrance into the world. They commended Alysa and Elissa for their quick thinking and composed actions during the unexpected delivery.
