30 Officers Face Charges for Allegedly Organising ‘Gladiator Fights’ Among Minors

In a shocking turn of events, 30 detention officers have been indicted on multiple charges for allegedly orchestrating “gladiator fights” between minors in a California juvenile hall. The officers, many of whom were women, are facing accusations of child endangerment and abuse, conspiracy and battery in connection to the incidents that took place at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey, California.

According to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, the officers were said to have facilitated around 69 fights involving over 140 youths aged between 12 and 18 from July 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023. Bonta condemned the actions of the officers, stating that they betrayed their duty of ensuring the safety and well-being of the minors under their supervision by allowing and even encouraging such violent confrontations.

The investigation into these disturbing events at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall was launched after a video of one of the fights surfaced in January 2024, leading to the unsealing of a grand jury indictment against the officers. The indictment revealed that the officers abused their authority and neglected their responsibilities by organizing the fights, deliberately putting the youths at risk of harm and injury.

The court documents detailed how the officers exploited their position of power, breaching the trust and confidence placed in them, in order to perpetrate these appalling acts. The indictment highlighted the severe impact of the fights on the children’s health and safety, as they were exposed to conditions that could result in serious bodily harm or even death.

Attorney General Bonta emphasised the significance of holding the officers accountable for their actions, underscoring the need to address the deficiencies within Los Angeles County’s juvenile hall system. Of the 30 officers implicated in the indictment, 22 appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court for arraignment, with the remainder scheduled to appear on April 18, 2025.
