Five Passengers Injured on United Airlines Flight After Severe Turbulence Reported

At least five passengers have been injured on a United Airlines flight bound for Houston after encountering severe turbulence mid-air. The incident led to the aircraft making an emergency landing at Waco Regional Airport in Texas on March 2, as per local reports.
The United Airlines jet had departed from Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri before being forced to divert to Waco following the turbulent conditions. The injured individuals were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals with injuries reported as “non-life-threatening” after emergency response teams from the Waco Fire Department and the Office of Emergency Management arrived at the scene.
Ryan Dirker, the emergency management coordinator for the McLennan County Office of Emergency Management, conveyed that the flight was carrying a total of 32 individuals, comprising 29 passengers. He mentioned, “They had turbulence. The rest of the folks, a great majority of them, are still at the airport trying to figure out next steps.”
Flight tracking data from FlightAware indicated that United Flight 5690 had taken off from Springfield slightly ahead of schedule at 4:48 p.m. and landed at Waco National Airport around one hour and 40 minutes later at 6:28 p.m., approximately 32 minutes earlier than the scheduled arrival time. The original destination for the flight was Houston Bush International Airport.
SkyWest Airlines, the operator of the flight, issued a statement through 25 News confirming, “SkyWest flight 5690, operating as United Express from Springfield, MO, to Houston, landed safely at Waco Regional Airport after experiencing turbulence.” The statement further assured that medical professionals met the passengers, with five individuals being subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment. SkyWest and United Airlines are actively working to ensure that the affected passengers receive necessary care and alternate travel arrangements.
On the same evening, three flights diverted to Waco Regional Airport, including two American Airlines flights which had initial plans to land at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, as reported by 25 News. Interim Director of Aviation, Michael A. Reisman, mentioned that the United Airlines aircraft will remain grounded at Waco Regional Airport for one to two days for thorough mechanical inspections.
