12 Deaths Reported amid Listeria Outbreak Linked to Recalled Frozen Shakes

In a tragic turn of events, a listeria outbreak linked to recalled frozen shakes has resulted in the loss of 12 lives, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA disclosed on Monday, Feb. 24, that the outbreak, associated with 4 oz. cartons of Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes, has affected individuals across 21 states, with 38 people falling ill. Among the infected, 37 required hospitalization, and sadly, 12 individuals have succumbed to the outbreak.

Listeria, a type of bacteria that can contaminate various foods, poses a serious health risk, as highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Symptoms of listeria infection can manifest as soon as the same day of consumption or up to 10 weeks later, according to the FDA.

A collaborative investigation conducted by the FDA and CDC revealed that the outbreak spans back to 2018, with a surge of 20 cases reported between 2024 and 2025. The investigation remains ongoing, with previous attempts failing to pinpoint the exact source of the outbreak. Consequently, Lyons Magnus took a proactive step by initiating a voluntary recall of the shakes, following a similar recall by Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc., the manufacturer, from their facility in Fort Wayne, Ind.

During the investigation, the FDA inspected the Prairie Farms facility, conducting tests on environmental and product samples, three of which yielded positive results for listeria in the processing area. Lyons Magnus has clarified that the recalled shakes were primarily distributed to long-term care facilities and were not available for general retail sale. Of the 38 individuals affected thus far, 34 were either residents of long-term care facilities or were already hospitalized before falling ill.

Both Lyons Magnus and Sysco have expressed their remorse and condolences to those impacted by the outbreak and their families. Following the revelation of the contamination issue, Lyons Magnus promptly took actions to cease the purchase of products from the affected Prairie Farms facility, inform customers, and ensure the removal of affected products from distribution channels nationwide.

According to the FDA, individuals should remain vigilant for mild symptoms of listeria, such as muscle aches, fever, fatigue, and gastrointestinal issues. In the event of severe listeriosis, symptoms can escalate to include severe headaches, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
