The parents of the late Thomas Kingston have broken their silence in a heartfelt plea to raise awareness about the potential side effects of antidepressants after their son tragically died by suicide at the age of 45 in February 2024. Jill and Martin Kingston spoke out in a poignant interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today show, ahead of the first anniversary of their son’s passing. Thomas, who was married to Lady Gabriella Windsor, a second cousin to King Charles, was discovered deceased at his parents’ home in the Cotswolds on February 25, 2024.

According to a spokesperson from the coroner’s office, Thomas’ cause of death was a “traumatic wound to the head,” with a gun found near his body. Reports suggest that Thomas had ceased taking his medication in the days leading up to his death. His parents are now advocating for more stringent measures when prescribing selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a commonly prescribed antidepressant. Two months prior, Katy Skerrett, the senior coroner for Gloucestershire, linked Thomas’ death to the antidepressants he had been taking, emphasizing his lack of suicidal intention.
In a snippet of the heartfelt interview shared on social media, Jill stressed the importance of ensuring that individuals prescribed SSRIs are fully informed about the potential risks. She proposed that those prescribed such medication sign a document acknowledging their awareness of the risks, specifically highlighting the possibility of suicidal ideation. Additionally, Jill advocated for a support system, suggesting that a spouse, partner, parent, or trusted individual should accompany the patient during this process.
Martin, Thomas’ father, shared how the outpouring of support through cards and letters brought solace amid their grief. Recounting the poignant gesture, he described affixing over 400 letters and cards to their home’s hallway wall. Martin expressed his desire for Thomas to be remembered as someone who always had a cheerful smile while assisting others through challenging circumstances.
Thomas Kingston, a financier and former hostage negotiator, entered the royal family when he married Lady Gabriella Windsor in 2019. The couple often attended royal events, and Thomas’ untimely passing deeply shook Buckingham Palace when the news was announced. During the Today show, Jill recounted the last moments spent with her son before the tragic incident occurred, highlighting Thomas’ upbeat mood and giving no indication of his inner turmoil.
Lady Gabriella Windsor also spoke on her husband’s passing during an inquest in Gloucestershire Coroner’s Court, attributing his impulsive actions to adverse reactions from the medication he had been taking. She emphasized the need for increased awareness of antidepressant side effects to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. Senior coroner Katy Skerrett recommended further actions be taken regarding patients prescribed SSRIs to mitigate potential risks.
