Australian actor Guy Pearce has been open about his past in soap operas, notably starring in the long-running Australian soap opera “Neighbours” in the 1980s. Pearce, now 57 years old, revisited his role as Mike Young for the soap’s 2022 finale and its 2023 return. While Pearce has been proud of his soap opera background, he revealed in an interview with The Times that he faced criticism from a fellow colleague for his work on the show.

In the interview, Pearce shared an incident where a “snobby actress” questioned his involvement in a play shortly after his stint on “Neighbours.” Recalling the encounter, Pearce mentioned that he had the impulse to physically confront the actress for her derogatory remarks. He remarked, “I did a play a year after I left [Neighbors] and this snobby actress said, ‘How could you even do that?’ I wanted to punch her!”
Despite his initial reaction, Pearce clarified that he did not act on his urge to retaliate physically. Reflecting on the actress’s attitude, Pearce expressed his disbelief at her disparaging comments. Interestingly, he encountered the same actress five years later in a commercial on television, prompting a strong desire to confront her about her past judgment.
Pearce’s portrayal of Mike Young on “Neighbours” marked a significant milestone in his career, serving as his first on-screen role. The actor acknowledged that although soap operas were once looked down upon in the industry, they provided valuable learning experiences for aspiring actors. Pearce admitted, “In the old days you were either a theatre actor or a film actor, and if you got stuck in a soap you were the lowest of the low — but what an opportunity.”
Notably, Pearce has embraced his soap opera roots and the lessons he gleaned from his time on “Neighbours.” When approached for advice by young actors, Pearce often emphasises the element of luck in one’s career trajectory. He shared, “When young actors ask me for advice, I shrug and say, ‘Get lucky?’ Because I got lucky.”
Currently, Guy Pearce is in contention for his first Academy Award nomination, competing for the Best Supporting Actor accolade for his role in the film “The Brutalist.” The movie, set against the backdrop of the Holocaust, features Pearce as wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren. Reflecting on his project choices, Pearce highlighted the importance of the story, character, and director in his decision-making process.
As Pearce navigates his acting career and garners recognition for his performances, he continues to draw on his diverse experiences, including his soap opera background. With a career spanning decades and a reputation for delivering captivating performances, Pearce remains a versatile and respected figure in the entertainment industry.
