In March 2022, Hulu premiered *The Dropout*, a limited series portraying the tumultuous journey of Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the now-defunct blood-testing company Theranos. Amanda Seyfried leads the cast as Holmes, providing a dramatic retelling of a story marked by ambition, deception, and eventual downfall. The narrative follows Holmes, a Stanford University dropout turned biotech entrepreneur, as she attempts to revolutionise blood testing with technology that ultimately proved to be fraudulent.
Holmes’ story is intertwined with that of her business partner, Sunny Balwani, played by Naveen Andrews. Both were tried and convicted for defrauding investors by falsely claiming that Theranos’ devices could conduct numerous medical tests with only a few drops of blood. In November 2022, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California announced that Holmes had been sentenced to 11 years and three months in federal prison for her crimes. She is anticipated to move to a halfway house in 2027 after spending several years behind bars. Balwani received a sentence of 12 years and 11 months for similar charges that endangered patient health and defrauded investors.

Hulu’s miniseries has garnered renewed attention due to the recent release of Nathan Fielder’s documentary *You Can See Everything*, which provides an intimate look at Holmes as she prepares to serve her prison term. In this unique documentary approach, Holmes watches clips of Seyfried portraying her character in *The Dropout*, and Seyfried returns to depict Holmes’ experiences while incarcerated, including a phone call to Fielder.
Seyfried’s decision to take on the role of Holmes came after Kate McKinnon initially vacated the project. The performer revealed in an interview with *The Hollywood Reporter* that she initially hesitated, concerned about the time commitment and the complexity of portraying such a notorious figure. However, she soon recognised the significance of the role and the opportunity it presented. “It’s a huge challenge. But I can’t believe that I get a challenge like this,” she reflected.
The series strives to delve deeper than mere sensationalism surrounding Holmes’ criminal activities; rather, it seeks to explore the reasons behind society’s fascination with individuals who experience dramatic falls from grace. The show investigates not just the mistakes Holmes made but also the broader cultural appeal of such narratives. Seyfried has emphasised that *The Dropout* is ultimately about understanding these dynamics.

Andrews, who portrays Sunny Balwani, found intrigue in the Theranos saga due to its complex aspect. He noted that while he was not initially engaged by the real-life events surrounding Theranos, the script’s depth drew him in. He related the narrative to Shakespearean themes, especially the questions surrounding love and sacrifice inherent in Balwani and Holmes’s relationship: “How far are you going to go for someone you love? What are you prepared to do?” His character not only represents a business partner but also encapsulates the deeply personal connection shared with Holmes.
Laurie Metcalf features in the series as Dr. Phyllis Gardner, a professor at Stanford who was among the first to challenge Holmes’ ambitious ideas. Gardner recalls how Holmes approached her with a wearable patch concept for detecting infections, which Gardner deemed unviable. “She was going to make it work and follow the model of ‘try it until you succeed’,” Gardner commented, reflecting on Holmes’ relentless ambition, even in the face of skepticism.
The series also includes Sam Waterston in the role of George Shultz, the former U.S. Secretary of State who served on Theranos’ board of directors. Shultz was instrumental in building the company’s credibility by recruiting various prominent figures, thus facilitating investor trust. Waterston has described the Theranos scandal as a cautionary tale regarding society’s vulnerability to deceptive practices, pointing out that “no matter how smart we are… we fall for it, much too easily.”
Dylan Minnette portrays Tyler Shultz, George’s grandson, who navigated the world of Theranos from enthusiastic intern to whistleblower. Tyler, who became a pivotal figure in uncovering the fraudulent practices at the company, has since launched his own biotech ventures. His transition from a Theranos employee to a market entrepreneur underscores the ongoing questions regarding ethics in technology and healthcare.
As *The Dropout* continues to captivate audiences with its blend of drama and real-life intrigue, the stark realities of Holmes’ and Balwani’s actions remain a pivotal discourse in the narrative. The series, alongside the new documentary, offers profound insights into ambition, ethical boundaries, and the quest for success, making it a compelling addition to the catalog of true crime storytelling.
