Mom Overcomes Challenges of Cerebral Palsy to Raise Son After Giving Birth

Kiaira Fedorus, a 23-year-old mother from Grand Prairie in Alberta, Canada, has faced significant challenges due to her diagnosis of spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy at just six months old. This condition resulted in the loss of function in the right side of her body, presenting obstacles in her daily life. Despite these hurdles, Fedorus persevered through surgeries and therapies to accomplish tasks like personal care and mobility. However, her greatest trial came with the prospect of motherhood.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Fedorus opened up about her fears and uncertainties surrounding raising a child with only the use of her left hand. She candidly expressed her initial concerns about how her disability might impact her son and her ability to provide him with a fulfilling life. These apprehensions were detailed in a personal essay she penned for the CBC, reflecting on her journey towards motherhood.
Fedorus welcomed her first child, a baby boy named Arthur, on April 1, 2024, with her fiancé Joey Barker. Contrary to her expectations of reduced mobility and limitations in caring for her son, Fedorus found herself more active and engaged with Arthur than she had imagined. Despite not having a driver’s license, she navigates daily tasks with her child, adapting and overcoming challenges with resilience and determination.
Living with cerebral palsy, Fedorus has had to cope with physical constraints, primarily in her right arm and hand. The 90-degree angle at which her hand is fixed presented additional hurdles in performing tasks with one hand. Overcoming societal norms and personal insecurities surrounding her disability, Fedorus embarked on a journey of self-acceptance and advocacy, especially during her teenage years and early adulthood.
Throughout her pregnancy and following Arthur’s birth via Caesarian section, Fedorus faced emotional and physical adjustments. Chronic pain associated with her condition added complexity to her role as a new mother, requiring support from her loved ones. Recalling the initial postpartum period, Fedorus emphasised the challenges she encountered in basic childcare tasks, with her fiancé playing a crucial role in assisting her during this transitional phase.
With time and perseverance, Fedorus gradually adapted to caring for Arthur independently, achieving milestones like changing his clothing and bathing him. Her journey of motherhood not only inspired her but also led her to establish Mothers Inclusive, a platform advocating for disability awareness and supporting disabled mothers.
