The couple, Dinesh and Sadhna, along with their daughter, were asleep at their residence in Delhi’s Madangir area when the incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. local time. Dinesh was reportedly awoken by excruciating pain on his face and torso, only to find his wife, Sadhna, standing over him with a container of hot oil. He claimed that she threatened to pour more oil on him if he shouted for help and then proceeded to sprinkle red chili powder on his burns.

Neighbours heard Dinesh’s screams but were allegedly ignored by the couple when they offered assistance. It wasn’t until the landlord’s daughter contacted Dinesh’s brother-in-law, Ram Sagar, that he was eventually taken to the hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of his burns, Dinesh was transferred from a local hospital to Safdarjung Hospital, where medical reports described his injuries as “dangerous”.

Police have initiated an investigation into the incident and have registered a case at the Ambedkar Nagar police station based on Dinesh’s statement and initial evidence. Although Sadhna has not been arrested at this stage, reports suggest that the couple had experienced previous issues during their eight-year marriage, which had led to police intervention in the past. However, they reconciled and continued living together in rented accommodation.
The sequence of events leading up to the alleged assault remains unclear. Dinesh mentioned to the police that the couple had an argument before going to bed on the night of the incident. It was revealed that Sadhna had lodged a complaint against her husband at the Crime Against Women (CAW) Cell two years ago, which was resolved at the time. However, she filed another complaint a few weeks prior to the recent incident.
