Renowned actress Jodie Foster recently revealed her apprehension about whether the iconic film “The Silence of the Lambs” would resonate with audiences. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the New York Film Festival screening of her latest movie “A Private Life,” Foster discussed her concerns and the impact of the thriller on its 35th anniversary.

Directed and co-written by Rebecca Zlotowski, “A Private Life” marks Foster’s third French-language film, highlighting her versatile acting skills. Reflecting on her experience with “The Silence of the Lambs,” Foster described it as a “rainbow experience” where everything fell into place from the start, a rare occurrence in the entertainment industry.
In the critically acclaimed “The Silence of the Lambs,” Foster portrayed the character of Clarice Starling, an FBI trainee who seeks insights from the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, to apprehend a notorious serial killer. The movie, directed by the late Jonathan Demme and based on Thomas Harris’s novel, was a collaborative effort that Foster felt was deeply meaningful.
While the cast and crew believed they were creating something significant, Foster admitted they were uncertain about how the audience would receive the film. Despite these worries, Foster expressed her pride in the enduring legacy of “The Silence of the Lambs,” emphasising its timeless quality and continued relevance even after decades since its release.
“The Silence of the Lambs” achieved both commercial success, grossing over $130 million in its initial theatrical run, and critical acclaim, earning the coveted “big five” Academy Awards. Foster’s portrayal of Clarice Starling earned her a second Oscar, following her earlier win for “The Accused,” while Hopkins received his first Academy Award for his portrayal of Dr. Lecter.
Reflecting on his casting in the film, Hopkins shared an intriguing anecdote about how he initially underestimated the script, thinking it was a children’s story due to its title. However, upon reading the script, he was captivated by the complexity of the character of Dr. Lecter and immediately recognised the role’s potential.
In addition to Hopkins’ stellar performance, Foster’s talent and dedication to her craft were also praised by the late Demme, who specifically envisioned Hopkins in the role of Dr. Lecter. Hopkins commended Foster for her professionalism and down-to-earth nature on set, highlighting her ability to immerse herself in her roles effortlessly.
As fans continue to appreciate the cinematic masterpiece that is “The Silence of the Lambs,” Foster’s candid reflections provide insight into the creative process and the lasting impact of the film on both the audience and the actors involved.
