Renowned Mexican artist, Paquita la del Barrio, who was celebrated for her empowering songs for women, has gracefully left this world at the age of 77. The official Instagram account of the ranchera and bolero singer shared the sorrowful news of her passing on Monday, February 17, from her home in Veracruz. The translated statement expressed, “With profound pain and sadness, we confirm the passing of our dear ‘Paquita La Del Barrio.’ A unique and irreplaceable artist who left a permanent fingerprint on the heart of all of us who knew her and enjoyed her music.”
The news of her passing comes as a great loss to the music community and her multitude of fans. The statement continued, “We thank you in advance for your understanding and respect during this difficult time.” The heartfelt tribute concluded, “Rest in peace, your music and legacy will live on forever in our hearts.” The New York Times reported that la del Barrio had to cancel her scheduled performance at the National Auditorium in Mexico City in January due to health concerns.

Born Francisca Viveros Barradas in 1947 in Veracruz, Mexico, Paquita la del Barrio gained fame for her iconic songs such as “Tres Veces te Engañé” (Three Times I Cheated on You) and “Rata de Dos Patas” (Two-Legged Rat). Her musical journey began in the 1970s in Mexico City, where she started performing in bars and restaurants. Before launching her solo career, she collaborated with her sister Viola Viveros to cover songs by Daniel Santos and Julio Jaramillo. She often credited her major influences as Antonio Aguilar and Pedro Infante.
