Three elderly Catholic nuns in Austria made headlines recently for breaking out of their retirement home to return to their former convent. Sisters Rita, Bernadette, and Regina, aged 82, 88, and 86 respectively, defied the odds and journeyed back to the Kloster Goldenstein convent in Elsbethen, near Salzburg. This courageous act of the nuns was supported by their former students, who assisted in their return.
The decision for the nuns to leave their convent and be placed in a Catholic retirement home stemmed from a church rule that required an order to have at least six living members. The trio had agreed to the move in December 2023, but they expressed their disagreement with this decision. The situation took a turn on September 4, when the three nuns decided to leave the retirement home and head back to the convent with the help of their former students.
Upon their return, Sister Bernadette explained, “I have been obedient all my life, but it was too much.” The nuns found their convent lacking basic amenities like running water and electricity upon their return but were determined to make it their home once again. The local community rallied around the nuns, providing support to make the convent habitable for the sisters.
Despite their joy at being back in familiar surroundings, the nuns expressed concerns about potential eviction by church officials. Sister Rita shared her gratitude at being back and the hope that they could continue serving the community. Markus Grasl, the abbot who managed the convent, expressed his bewilderment at the nuns’ actions and raised concerns about their well-being. Grasl’s statements indicated a lack of agreement with the nuns’ decision and hinted at possible challenges the sisters might face.
