A retired Air Force captain, aged 35, lost her life in a devastating midair collision that occurred during a competition in Colorado. Kristen Morris was competing in the 2025 Kyle Scott Aerobatic Dust-up event in Fort Morgan when the fatal crash took place. The competition was being held in honor of another pilot who had tragically passed away the year before.

According to the International Aerobatic Club (IAC), the accident happened on August 31 when two planes, an Extra aircraft, and a Cessna, collided midair. Both aircraft had two occupants on board at the time of the collision. The IAC confirmed Kristen Morris as one of the casualties of the crash.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office received an alert at approximately 10:44 a.m. local time regarding the collision at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport. Investigations revealed that the Cessna was on its final approach to the runway when it was struck by the second plane. The impact caused both planes to crash to the ground and ignite in flames.
While the occupants of the Cessna sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene, one person from the other aircraft, identified as David Shangraw, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, Kristen Morris, the second person in the aircraft, was pronounced dead at the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting a thorough investigation into the midair collision.
Kristen Morris was a highly experienced pilot, having served as a C-130J pilot in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a first officer at SkyWest Airlines. She was also actively involved in the Air Force Wounded Warriors programme and was known for her exceptional skills and dedication to the aviation community.
Her friend, Rhoda Bargas, paid tribute to Morris, acknowledging the risks that come with flying, especially in high-intensity situations like aerobatic competitions. Morris was described as a passionate and skilled pilot who brought positivity and kindness to those around her.
The tragic incident has deeply impacted the aviation community, as they mourn the loss of another talented pilot. Morris’ friends and colleagues remember her for her generous spirit, love for flying, and positive influence on those around her. The legacy of Kristen Morris, a dedicated and accomplished aviator, will continue to inspire and influence the aviation community for years to come.
