Tragedy struck the remote Marrah Mountains in western Sudan as a deadly landslide wiped out the village of Tarsin on Sunday, August 31. Reports indicate that more than 1,000 people lost their lives in the natural disaster, with only one survivor emerging from the wreckage. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM), an armed group controlling the area, described the scene as the entire village being “completely leveled to the ground.”
The harrowing incident has prompted a plea for international assistance in recovering the bodies buried under the debris. The difficult mountainous terrain and ongoing heavy rainfall have hindered rescue efforts, making it challenging to ascertain the exact death toll. The United Nations’ deputy humanitarian coordinator for Sudan highlighted the logistical challenges in reaching the affected area, emphasising the need for support in navigating the treacherous conditions.

Eerily reminiscent of a similar catastrophe in 2018 that claimed hundreds of lives in Turba village, the landslide in Tarsin has once again thrust the region into mourning. As Central Darfur’s Marrah Mountains reel from the devastation, cries for unity and solidarity among the Sudanese people echo through the grief-stricken communities. The General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur has called for a collective response to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
Amidst this tragedy, Sudan continues to grapple with a protracted civil war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023. The conflict has inflicted a heavy toll on the country, with varying estimates of casualties and widespread displacement reported. Against the backdrop of this ongoing strife, the landslide further underscores the urgent need for humanitarian aid and concerted efforts to address the multiple crises facing the nation.
The RSF and the Sudanese government’s collaboration will be critical in facilitating access for humanitarian organisations to provide relief to the affected communities. Passage permits and logistical support are imperative in navigating the volatile landscape and delivering vital assistance to those in distress. The collective response to this tragedy will test Sudan’s resilience and determination to overcome adversity in the face of overwhelming challenges.

As the international community grapples with the aftermath of this catastrophic event, solidarity and compassion are paramount in supporting Sudan as it mourns the loss of over 1,000 lives in the landslide. The road to recovery will be arduous, but with concerted global efforts and unwavering support, Sudan can begin the long journey towards healing and rebuilding in the wake of this devastating natural disaster.
