In an inspiring narrative, Mariah George, a dedicated mother from the UK, has opened up about her efforts to provide her son, Luca, with a childhood filled with joy and ordinary experiences despite the challenges posed by his rare genetic disorder. Luca was born with SPATA5L1-related disorder, an incredibly uncommon condition that affects fewer than 100 children globally. His mother, Mariah, expressed her desire for people to see Luca as a child first, emphasising that his diagnosis is merely a part of his story, not his identity.
Reflecting on her family’s journey, 28-year-old Mariah explained how they strive to bring normality to Luca’s life, saying that although their lives can sometimes feel dominated by medical appointments and hospital visits, they ensure to carve out moments for fun and adventure. “We work hard to give Luca as much of a typical childhood as possible,” she told reporters.

As Luca approaches his fifth birthday on October 7, he faces numerous challenges, including his inability to walk or use his hands independently. Regrettably, Luca’s epilepsy has proven drug-resistant, complicating his condition further. He also suffers from hearing loss but has benefitted from bilateral cochlear implants that help restore his hearing. However, beyond his medical needs, Luca is portrayed as a spirited little boy with a zest for life. He delights in beach outings, enjoys spending time with family and dogs, and showcases his playful personality through a device that allows him to communicate using eye movements.

Mariah has become attuned to the myriad ways Luca expresses himself. “He is a determined little boy,” she says. Despite the physical limitations imposed by his condition, Luca’s personality shines through. Mariah noted that he communicates his likes and dislikes and offers a glimpse of his character, revealing a young boy full of stubbornness, humour, and determination.
Given the unpredictability surrounding Luca’s condition, Mariah is particularly committed to creating environments where he can simply be a child. This includes trips to parks and the beach, adaptive cycling, and even the exciting prospect of adaptive surfing. “I just want people to see him as a little boy first,” she reiterated. “His diagnosis is part of his narrative, but it certainly isn’t the totality of who he is.”
The complexity of Luca’s condition brings considerable uncertainty, a source of distress for Mariah and her family. With so little known about SPATA-related disorders, they often find themselves navigating this journey alongside Luca’s medical team. “The uncertainty can be one of the hardest parts for us,” she explained, highlighting the lack of established treatments or roadmaps for families like hers.
As Mariah’s quest for answers intensified, her efforts extended beyond her own familial struggles. After leaving her marketing career to pursue a degree in nursing, Mariah founded The SPATA Foundation, a non-profit organisation aimed at advocating for families affected by SPATA5 and SPATA5L1-related disorders. Her dedication reflects a transformative shift, converting personal fear into purpose-driven action. “I realised how little research and support existed for these rare disorders, and I couldn’t just sit back,” Mariah stated with conviction.
Under her leadership, The SPATA Foundation has focused on raising awareness, facilitating connections among families, and funding vital research. The initiative has not only propelled advocacy but has also brought together a community of remarkable individuals engaged in similar struggles, allowing Mariah to help others while fostering hope for Luca’s future.
Despite the significant upheaval Luca’s disorder has brought to their lives, Mariah and her husband, Nick, remain grounded in their love and the normal family moments they cherish. “His condition has reshaped our family’s life, but it’s taught us to celebrate the small victories,” she reflected. Each milestone, whether it’s a new skill, a shared laugh, or a simple day under the sun, carries profound meaning for the George family.
Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of families facing the complexities of rare genetic disorders, illustrating the power of hope, love, and community in the journey of raising a child with special needs. As they continue to advocate for a brighter future, the George family remains committed to ensuring that Luca experiences as full and vibrant a childhood as possible.
