Sheryl Crow, the renowned country superstar at 63, recently shed light on why she believes her fanbase spans across generations, including younger audiences. In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE on the red carpet in Nashville for Stand Up to Cancer’s annual fundraising special, Crow expressed her belief that music is deeply tied to memories, stating that “the music that you gravitate to is the music that you’ve made a lot of memories to.”

Reflecting on her own experiences, Crow elaborated, saying, “When I hear stuff from like the ’80s or you know, ’90s, I go, ‘Oh my God, I remember where I was when I heard that.’ And so for some of these young people, their parents were playing my music and they had memories like water skiing to ‘Soak Up the Sun’ and things like that.”

Acknowledging the powerful impact of music in connecting people and evoking emotions, Crow emphasized that music serves to unite individuals and create lasting bonds. She also highlighted her continuous presence in the music industry as a female artist, portraying herself as an inspiration for young women by showcasing longevity and creativity in her career.
