A 24-year-old woman has made it abundantly clear to her boyfriend that he should not “expect anything financially” from her. In a Reddit post that has since been deleted, the woman revealed that she had been in a relationship with her boyfriend, also 24, for over two years. Initially, her boyfriend would visit her once a week, but as time went on, he began spending four to five days a week at her apartment, even having a key and designated space in her closet.

As the boyfriend’s presence in her home increased, the woman decided that he should shoulder the financial burden of their dates and other expenses since he did not contribute financially to the household. She admitted that she did not offer to pay for outings and expected him to foot the bill because he did not contribute to the household bills or chores and only brought groceries that mainly consisted of snacks for himself.
After about six months of this arrangement, the boyfriend expressed his desire to split expenses evenly, prompting the woman to insist that he either move his belongings out of her home or visit during the day and only be offered water since he did not financially contribute. She took a firm stance, restricting him to limited use of household items and minimal hospitality while at her apartment.

Despite eventually agreeing to an adjusted 70/30 financial arrangement, tensions continued to escalate between the couple. The woman felt hurt when her boyfriend made a remark indicating that if she expected him to cover all expenses, she should seek a relationship with someone else. This led her to communicate her stance on financial expectations, emphasising that each individual should bear their own costs for shared activities and not anticipate monetary gestures from her.
Following the woman’s disclosure on Reddit, commenters overwhelmingly advised her to reconsider the relationship, observing that the dynamic seemed devoid of mutual affection and was marred by unhealthy financial dynamics. The public reaction underscored the significance of open communication and mutual respect in romantic partnerships, urging individuals to reassess relationships where financial expectations overshadow emotional connections.
The woman’s story serves as a cautionary tale highlighting the complexities of navigating financial expectations within romantic relationships. It prompts introspection on the importance of equitable contribution and mutual understanding in sustaining healthy partnerships. While financial discussions can often reveal underlying tensions and disparities, they also offer an opportunity for couples to reassess their values and priorities, paving the way for more transparent and fulfilling relationships.
