A recent study has unveiled the crucial role of diet over exercise in combatting obesity. While it is a common belief that both increased calorie intake and reduced physical activity contribute to the rising rates of obesity, this new study sheds light on the relative significance of each factor in tackling this global health issue.
The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), analysed the energy expenditure patterns of adults from 34 diverse populations across six continents. Despite variations in lifestyle and economic status, the research discovered that energy expenditure remained relatively consistent across different populations, regardless of their level of development.

Interestingly, the study highlighted that calorie intake, particularly from highly processed foods, emerged as the primary driver behind the surge in obesity rates. The economic development of an area was linked to higher calorie consumption and lower levels of physical activity among its residents. This trend underscores the detrimental impact of a diet rich in ultra-processed foods prevalent in economically advanced societies.
According to the study, the body tends to regulate energy expenditure, balancing it out to maintain stability on a daily basis. Consequently, even if individuals engage in higher levels of physical activity and exercise, the body adjusts by allocating less energy to other bodily functions. This adaptive mechanism results in a relatively uniform energy expenditure pattern across different populations.
While exercise remains crucial for overall health and well-being, the study emphasised the pivotal role of a healthy diet, particularly one rich in whole foods, in the fight against obesity. The prevalence of ultra-processed foods poses a significant risk for obesity, as higher consumption of such foods correlates with an increased likelihood of obesity development.
Herman Pontzer, a professor of biology and global health and one of the authors of the study, underscored the importance of embracing a clean diet as a cornerstone in the battle against obesity. While exercise should not be disregarded, prioritising a diet comprising whole foods is key to addressing the obesity epidemic effectively.
In conclusion, the study’s findings underscore the critical importance of dietary choices in combating obesity, overshadowing the role of exercise in this regard. As societies continue to grapple with rising obesity rates, promoting dietary habits centred around whole foods and reducing reliance on ultra-processed options emerges as a vital strategy for curbing this public health crisis.
