Levi’s Stadium, home to the San Francisco 49ers, will see its second Super Bowl event after hosting Super Bowl 50 in 2016. This upcoming game will mark the third time that the prestigious event has been held in the Bay Area. The announcement of the venue selection was made by the NFL in May 2023 for Levi’s Stadium and in December 2023 for SoFi Stadium, which is home to both the Los Angeles Chargers and the Los Angeles Rams.
California’s history of hosting the Super Bowl stretches back several decades. The first Bay Area Super Bowl was held in 1985 at Stanford Stadium, where the San Francisco 49ers secured their second championship title. SoFi Stadium, the venue for Super Bowl LXI, previously hosted the championship in 2022. Los Angeles has been a significant location for the Super Bowl, hosting several games from 1967 to 1993. Additionally, the state of California will have hosted the Super Bowl a total of 15 times by 2027, making it the second state with the most hosting opportunities after Florida.
Notably, California will not be the first state to host consecutive Super Bowl games. Florida achieved this feat in 2020 and 2021 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, respectively. Looking ahead, Levi’s Stadium and SoFi Stadium will also be venues for 2026 FIFA World Cup matches. Furthermore, in 2028, Los Angeles is set to host the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. Super Bowl LXII is scheduled to take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in 2028, marking Georgia’s fourth time hosting the prestigious event.
The NFL has not yet announced the locations for Super Bowl games beyond 2028. With these exciting developments in the world of sports, fans and enthusiasts can look forward to thrilling competitions in some of the most iconic sporting venues across the United States.
