A recent tragedy involving Air India has taken a heartbreaking turn as families of the victims face an unimaginable ordeal. According to a lawyer representing some of the affected families, two families in the United Kingdom were given the wrong remains of their loved ones who perished in the Air India crash. The lawyer, James Healy-Pratt, expressed that this mix-up has inflicted a “double psychological trauma” on the already grieving families.
The Air India flight was bound for London but tragically crashed shortly after departing from Ahmedabad Airport in India, resulting in the loss of around 260 lives. In the aftermath of the crash, forensic experts and officials from the DGCA worked tirelessly to gather evidence at the crash site. Among the victims, 241 of the 242 passengers onboard the ill-fated flight lost their lives in the tragic incident.

Healy-Pratt revealed that the distressing errors came to light when Inner West London coroner Dr. Fiona Wilcox attempted to match DNA samples of the victims with their families. Shockingly, it was discovered that the remains in two caskets did not belong to the intended individuals. In one case, the remains were completely unrelated to the deceased, while in another instance, DNA from multiple sources was found, causing confusion and further pain for the families.
The repercussions of this mix-up have been devastating, with at least one family having to cancel funeral arrangements upon realising the grave error. Healy-Pratt emphasised that these families deserve a clear explanation for what has transpired, as they navigate through this harrowing experience of losing a loved one and facing the additional trauma of wrongly identified remains.
Addressing the concerning developments, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Shri Randhir Jaiswal stated that authorities are actively collaborating with their UK counterparts to address the issues raised regarding the incorrect handling of remains. Despite assurances of professionalism in handling the mortal remains, Jaiswal acknowledged the gravity of the situation and the need for thorough investigation and resolution.
However, Healy-Pratt voiced his discontent with the response from the Indian authorities, deeming it inadequate and calling for more decisive actions to rectify the situation. The affected families are seeking concrete assurances from the Indian authorities to ensure that such distressing errors do not occur again and that the remains of British nationals are accurately identified and handled with the utmost respect.
As the families affected by this tragic event continue to grapple with the emotional turmoil of losing their loved ones, the quest for justice and closure remains paramount. The need for transparency and accountability in handling such sensitive matters is crucial to providing solace and peace of mind to those affected by the Air India tragedy. Through ongoing investigations and cooperation between authorities, it is hoped that the families will find the answers and closure they seek in the midst of this heartbreaking ordeal.
