The devastating plane crash that claimed the life of Eugene Peltola Jr., the husband of former Democratic Representative Mary Peltola from Alaska, has finally been explained by federal investigators after almost two years following the incident. Eugene was piloting a small aircraft in St. Mary’s, Alaska, in September 2023, when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff, leading to his untimely death at the age of 57. On July 22, investigators disclosed their findings on the tragic occurrence, attributing the crash to the distribution of weight in the plane and strong winds, as reported by The Associated Press.
According to the final report released by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub plane, which Eugene was flying solo, was found to be over 117 pounds overweight due to a significant amount of moose meat carried as cargo. An additional factor was the presence of moose antlers mounted on the right wing of the aircraft, causing drag during motion. The weight overload, drag, and imbalance on the right wing, compounded by windy conditions, were cited as factors that likely led to the plane’s inability to manoeuvre adequately above the terrain, stated the report via AP.

The NTSB’s Alaska region chief, Clint Johnson, described the crash as a result of a “perfect storm of contributing factors,” indicating that without any one of these factors, the flight might have concluded safely. In the days leading up to the crash, Eugene had transported a group of hunters to an airstrip in St. Mary’s. The hunters had successfully hunted a moose the day prior to the tragedy and had arranged for Eugene to transport the meat using his plane. Eugene had already conducted one round of meat transportation before the crash occurred, without using scales to precisely measure the weight of the cargo.
Following the revelations on the cause of the fatal crash, Mary Peltola, who is no longer serving in Congress, took legal action against the plane’s owner, alleging negligence. In her civil suit, Mary accused the owner, who was Eugene’s employer, and the two associated companies of compelling her husband to undertake excessive flight hours under perilous conditions and without proper rest. Additionally, she claimed that the owner directed Eugene to carry external cargo without the necessary permit. The lawsuit, filed on July 18, seeks damages of at least $100,000, as detailed by Alaska News Source.
Mary Peltola, who secured a historic victory in Alaska’s House of Representatives in 2022, serves as a notable figure in Alaskan politics. She ran in the special election to represent Alaska’s sole House seat, eventually defeating prominent figures like Sarah Palin and Nick Begich III. However, her political career was cut short in the 2024 elections when Begich managed to regain the seat, ending Mary’s tenure in Congress. Despite this setback, Mary’s contributions and achievements in Alaska’s political landscape remain noteworthy.
The tragic incident and subsequent legal actions undertaken by Mary shed light on the complexities and risks associated with aviation operations, especially in challenging conditions like those faced in Alaska’s remote regions. The loss of Eugene Peltola serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritising safety and adherence to regulations in all aspects of air travel. As investigations continue and legal proceedings unfold, the legacy of Eugene Peltola and the impact of this unfortunate event on Mary Peltola and her family remain at the forefront of public attention.
