Stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts are in for a treat this week as a major annual meteor shower is set to light up the night sky. The Perseids meteor shower, known as the best meteor shower of the year, is expected to be visible across the United States. This spectacular event is a favourite among skywatchers for its dazzling display of meteors streaking through the atmosphere.

According to NASA, the Perseids meteor shower will be active from around July 17 to August 23 in 2025. The peak of the shower is set to occur overnight from August 12 to 13, with an impressive display of about 50 to 100 meteors visible per hour. Stargazers observing under dark-sky conditions can expect to witness meteors travelling at a velocity of approximately 37 miles per second.
NASA describes the Perseids as swift and bright meteors that often leave long ‘wakes’ of light and colour behind them as they streak through the Earth’s atmosphere. The shower is also known for its fireballs, larger explosions of light and colour that can persist longer than average meteor streaks due to originating from larger particles of cometary material.
Although the Perseids shower appears to radiate from the constellation Perseus, its namesake, NASA clarifies that the constellation merely aids viewers in identifying the shower they are watching on a given night. The meteors do not originate from the constellation itself but are visible across the Northern Hemisphere, including most parts of the U.S.
The Perseids meteor shower is expected to be a breathtaking sight for those who stay up late to catch a glimpse of this celestial event. With its swift meteors and colourful bursts of light, the shower promises an awe-inspiring experience for all who look up at the night sky. This annual phenomenon serves as a reminder of the beauty and wonder of the universe, captivating audiences with its celestial display.
As we gear up for the peak of the Perseids meteor shower this week, astronomers and amateur skywatchers alike are eagerly anticipating the chance to witness this natural spectacle. With the promise of a stunning show of meteors streaking across the sky, this event is sure to inspire wonder and fascination among all who take the time to look up and gaze at the stars.
