A 75-year-old woman from Colorado displayed incredible perseverance and determination when she crawled for 14 hours back to her home with a broken leg. Charlene Kirby, a retired nurse and paramedic, suffered a femur injury while cleaning up her remote property in McCoy on June 7. Despite the difficulty of her situation, Kirby managed to crawl her way home, like an “inchworm,” as she described it, until her son found her on the morning of June 8.

Living in a remote area has its challenges, as Kirby discovered after her fall. The incident occurred when she was clearing brush and weeds from her property and encountered difficulties with a trailer attached to a vehicle. When the vehicle began rolling backwards over her, Kirby tried to run but ultimately fell, breaking her femur in the process. With no one around to assist her, she knew she had to make her way back home for help.

Despite the excruciating pain and the risk of further injury, Kirby made the tough decision to start pulling herself towards her house. She was determined to reach her basement where she could call for help. Throughout the night, she battled the cold, pulling a sweatshirt over her head for warmth as she slowly but steadily crawled back home, inch by inch. The gruelling journey lasted 14 hours, during which time she kept motivating herself to take just one more step.
When Kirby’s son finally found her the next morning, she was covered in dirt and debris from her arduous journey. She recounted how her son described the scene, with dirt in her nose, ears, teeth, hair, and even a rock lodged in her belly button. Despite the obvious challenges and physical toll, Kirby maintained a sense of humour, expressing a wish that someone had captured her appearance on camera.
After undergoing surgery on her femur and hip and completing rehabilitation, Kirby was able to return home nearly a month later. She received encouragement from her doctor that she would be well enough to attend her grandson’s wedding, although dancing might not be an option. Nevertheless, Kirby remains determined, declaring confidently, “Watch me,” in response to the doctor’s caution.
Kirby’s incredible story of resilience and strength serves as an inspiration to many. Her unwavering spirit and refusal to give up in the face of adversity demonstrate the power of human perseverance. Despite facing immense challenges and enduring a harrowing ordeal, Kirby’s determination to make it back home for help showcases the indomitable will of the human spirit. We can all learn from her example of courage and tenacity in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
